Apprentice Company Members Work Alongside Pros

posted: Sunday, May 30th, 2010

At the heart of Pensacola Shakespeare Theatre is a hard working group of apprentices, eager to begin work this summer. 5 acting apprentices and 1 costume apprentice will start work on Much Ado About Nothing this July, alongside professionals in their fields. The acting apprentices will spend their mornings in rehearsals, their afternoons working on tech assignments, and then back to rehearsals for the evening. Our costume apprentice will spend the first week assisting the costumer designer for Much Ado, then will get her turn as she designs costumes for Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged). It’s a tough schedule to be sure, but not an uncommon one.
Pensacola Shakespeare is very proud of our apprentices, and wish them well this summer.

Dramaturgs Play an Important Role at Pensacola Shakespeare

posted: Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Dramaturgy can take on many forms, but it generally refers to the research that is shared among the Director, Designers, and Actors for a given production. Pensacola Shakespeare’s resident Dramaturg is Dr. Greg Lanier, head of the UWF Honor’s program and a published Shakespearean scholar. Dr. Lanier will focus his work this season on Much Ado About Nothing. Greg will be available to the cast and crew to answer questions that arise from the text, and point up interesting and useful items from a scholarly perspective to the actors and director. Assisting Dr. Lanier is Sheila Mettetal, who will focus her work on the time period in which Much Ado... will be set: 1945. Sheila will be armed with a mountain of information including the sights and sounds of the period for the company to digest. It’s all about capturing the beauty of Shakespeare’s language while giving a detailed portrayal of the time period, and the work of Dr. Lanier and Ms. Mettetal is invaluable to our efforts.

Pensacola Shakespeare Actor Involved In Murder

posted: Friday, May 28th, 2010

Thom Hofrichter will be here in August to play the befuddled but well-meaning Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing, but first he has to direct a murder. The hillarious dark comedy Murderers is playing at First Presbyterian Theatre in Ft. Wayne Indiana, and Thom, the Theatre’s Managing Artistic Director is directing. Stop by their website here

We wish Thom’s cast all the best, and promise to return him safely to Ft. Wayne when Much Ado About Nothing closes in August.

Before coming to Pensacola, actor Gary Lamb has his hands full in Pasadena

posted: Friday, May 28th, 2010

In August, you’ll know him as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and one of the three actors in Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged). But currently Los Angeles audiences know him as the Artistic Director of Crown City Theatre, the home of the original and inventive musical USS Pinafore. Adapted from Gilbert and Sullivan, this outer space operetta has the Los Angeles audiences cheering. Check out their website here

We wish Gary and Crown City Theatre all the best, and we can’t wait for Pensacola audiences to meet him!

Pensacola Shakespeare Theatre belongs to you!

posted: Sunday, May 16th, 2010

One year ago, there was no Pensacola Shakespeare Theatre – no one was preparing to welcome Julia Duffy and Jerry Lacy to our city – and the thought of bringing professional theatre to Pensacola was still just an idea. What a difference a year makes! As the lights went down on A.R. Gurney’s LOVE LETTERS at the Sanders Beach Community Center on Thursday night, I thought back on all the supporters and friends of Pensacola Shakespeare Theatre that it took to make the night happen. Early donors that gave us much needed operating funds, generous friends who threw parties at their homes so we could sell our idea in person, and the local media who recognized that we had a good idea, and helped us get the word out. This Theatre doesn’t belong to me, or the Board of Directors, it belongs to you Pensacola; it is your professional theatre. You now have what the citizens of Montgomery AL, Orlando FL, Ashland OR, and Cedar City UT have been bragging about for years: A professional Shakespeare Theatre, open for business this August. So let us hear from you! Do you have comments? suggestions? a favorite play? Tell us about it by contacting us here
